Today I will introduce an application to you, that is essential for every operating system. Since the file browser that ships with Nokias Symbian devices is pretty poor regarding functionality, there is a big market for advanced file managers. Y-Browser is one that tries to fill the gap.

Review conditions

I installed the latest version 0.88(2) of Y-Browser on my Nokia E65.

Installation

Y-Browser is installed very quick: just point your internet browser to drjukka.com and click on the download link. The installations starts immediately, just choose one or more of the 32 available languages and you can begin to use it after some seconds. But in order to gain full functionality you should install some of the plugins that are also available on the official site.

First view

As expected from a native application, Y-Browser starts pretty fast. You will get to see the drives of your phone and browse around your file system via the directions keys.

Main features

Naturally Y-Browser is for browsing through the folders of your device. You can cut, copy and paste files and folders. Furthermore you can select multiple files via pencil key or delete files via delete key.

Another nice feature is the integrated file search. There are two ways to look for files. You can either turn on search in the menu and begin searching for files in the same folder just by typing letters, or you switch to the search menu where you can perform an advanced search for looking through the whole file system.

Besides these basic operations you can also view file attributes like the date of last change and even edit these attributes.

What is more it is possible to view all files of your mail folders. You will need to install the “Mail Folders” plugin for that feature. If you would like to open files directly out of Y-Browser you can set up file associations for specific file types.

Handling

When I had Y-Browser in use it was very easy to browse around and perform actions without having to look for how to do it, that’s what I call intuitive handling. It is also possible to set up custom shortcuts, a nice feature if you want to have full control over the handling, but I would prefer having some standard and pre set shortcuts.

Weaknesses

One weakness I noticed in my review of Y-Tasks, also appears in Y-Browser. When switching to landscape mode the functions of the directions keys do not switch properly, intuitive handling is no longer possible then. Another little thing is that in fullscreen mode a small white bar appears at the bottom, but that problem only exists on certain Symbian 3.0 devices. Aside from these I didn’t find any weaknesses.

Conclusion

The application Y-Browser on it’s own is really functional, high-performance and easy to use. If you have the offered plugins installed it gets even better. With Y-Browser you get a stronger computer like feeling of your mobile phone. 4 of 5 stars.
